One of the great statements of the last 100 years or so says "the arc of the moral Universe is long, but it bends towards Justice." That was, appropriately enough, Martin Luther King.
In the last 40 years or so, there has been a concerted, long-term shift in social attitudes in America, and an equally concerted, long-term effort to stop that shift. The shift has been towards greater social equality and fairness, and it has been fought lock-step, doggedly, by an entrenched elite.
If you're curious about which side of this debate you're on, history will record that the conservative, far-right extremists of the late 20th and early 21st century were on the wrong side of history. History never looks back at the knuckle-dragging, heels-dug-in entrenched losers of struggles for social justice, and says hey those guys weren't so bad after all. Usually, the leading figures of such movements become emblematic of failure, stupidity, greed, selfishness, venality, and evil.
What's been remarkable about the last five years or so of this struggle has been how rapidly the extreme far-right has lost ground, and how decisively they have been trounced.
In 2004, many folks who observed those elections noticed that things didn't look all that great for Bush (they never actually did, except for about a 3-month period after 9/11 he was one of the least-popular Presidents ever), but then all of these cities in Liberalville started legalizing gay marriage. Exhausted from fear and war-mongering the far right was happy to oblige in some gay-bashing to bring the 2004 elections home, and that is indeed most of what happened. But the gay-bashing was so evil, so over-the-top, so severe that it started a backlash. The Republicans have really never recovered from it.
Now, gay marriage is legal in many states, and the fear-mongering and bullshit has gotten so extreme that it's now virtually impossible to gay-bash one's way to public office. In a period of eight short years, we've gone from guaranteed election to guaranteed rejection.
Now, in this last election season, after first deciding that the best way to get out the vote was to restrict it as forcefully as possible, the GOP wanted to make sure that the public forgot all about their Tea-Bag-Party's promises to improve jobs in this country, so they yammered a lot about women, and sluts, and rape.
Now, you'd think the GOP's "boldness" in being willing to act like knuckle-dragging, slope-headed Neanderthals would be a sign that society has started some desperate slide down into utter savagery, but what is interesting is that in the wake of the 2012 elections, which ended with massive failure for almost every Republican cause on the table, now we're reading that abortion and women's rights are increasingly favored by the majority, almost as if the nation got a taste of what the Republicans really want and went barf, this is sickening crap.
Another example, for decades, it's been guaranteed, known and accepted by Democrats to not talk about gun control because the NRA was such a big bad monkey they would Donkey Kong your ass into electoral outer space. But strangely, the more the Democrats talk about sensible, rational means of keeping gun violence from tearing our children into pieces, the less popular the NRA becomes, the more their hysterics and shrieking fall on deaf, unsympathetic ears.
And for years it's been accepted, known, and understood that saying anything positive about "unions" is a sure way to piss of the American worker. The milking class (also known as the super-wealthy) had succeeded wildly, beyond their dearest dreams, in demonizing and villifying the working man and woman, and yet I do detect a gradually rising backlash, a dawning realization even amongst the lowest of the low-information tools of the far right, that hey, unions actually protect us working people.
Well informed political junkies are aware of the Powell Memo, a 1970's-era construction by the late Supreme Court justice which kind of lays out the blueprint the far right has followed in turning this country into a third-world shithole.
It has taken the American public four decades to catch on to what is being done to them, and by who. GOD HELP the sons of bitches trying to ruin this country when we finally catch up with them. GOD HELP them, whoever he is, because there are going to be some god-damn angry Americans ready to visit terrible vengeance on a certain very tiny group of worthless rich asswipes.
Most of the awful dismal suffering we've endured as our jobs have been wiped out, our environment raped, and our social order perverted, didn't need to happen. By spitting into the wind of history, the forces of greed, selfishness, and bigotry have guaranteed that instead of passively farting and burping along in the back, the people of this nation have turned to face them directly, and repudiate their horseshit, and end their destructive influence on our great nation.
So keep fucking those chickens, conservatives. Keep saying asshole things about women. Keep being racist douchebags. Keep kicking the working folk in the face. Eventually, you'll have no voice in our society, and everything you want and dream of will be dead.
I don't give a crap if you believe me or not. History has already rendered her judgment, and it will be exceedingly harsh.
